Eight Years and Counting

Brad and I are just a few weeks away from celebrating our 9th anniversary...WOW!  There are so many emotions that I feel when I think of the past 9 years - joy, happiness, love, gratefuleness.  We have been blessed, so very blessed.  Wonderful families, great jobs, a fabulous church, precious friendships.

But.

Within those 9 years, there has been "the other side" of our lives that have made up our marriage.

Infertility.

Close to 8 years of it to be exact.  EIGHT years.  Wow, that is so overwhelming to say that, much less type it. A little over a year after we got married, we had hopeful dreams of becoming parents, and were excited to start trying to make that a reality.  I had always had irregular cycles, but just thought it would all work itself out.  One year went by in a blink, with no baby or pregnancy for us - but the arrival of 2 nieces.  I went to my regular GYN, and after some testing determined that I had PCOS (Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome) and was put on Glucophage.  Year 2 crept by, each month just knowing it was "the month"...but, never was.  Year 3 came and went, along with another niece and nephew being born and a whole HOST of babies filling our church nursery and friends' arms - but not our own.  We were SO discouraged.  So frustrated.  So hurt.

We decided it was time to look to a specialist for help.  Year 4 was filled with many months of progesterone checks, ovulation tests, HCG tests, Clomid, and negative pregnancy test results.  Year 5 came, and my doctor wanted to try 1 more month on Clomid in January.  So we did, and much to our surprise found out we were pregnant in February! I called Brad in disbelief at what the nurse had told me on the phone - "you're pregnant"!  It was finally OUR time!  We had no sooner told all of our family, and started thinking about what it would be like as a family of 3, that problems began and I miscarried.  The pain we had felt with infertility was now amplified with the loss of a pregnancy.  That was by far some of the darkest days of this journey, and rocked Brad and I to the core.  We took a few months off from any medications, and then we started our first round of FSH shots.  Nada.  My doctor felt it was time to try to do an IUI.  So, the day before Thanksgiving of 2008 we had our first IUI.  I started bleeding 2 weeks after, and after calling my doctor's nurse, she said I had started my period and was not pregnant.  However, 5 weeks later I started having excruciating pain and found out I was in fact pregnant, but was having an ectopic pregnancy.  I woke up the next day in a hospital bed, one fallopian tube less than I had the day before.  In physical pain yes, but the emotional trauma was much greater.

My doctor said "you need a break".  A break?!!  A BREAK!??  Yes, my body had been pumped to the max with enough baby making meds in the past 2 years to make any sane woman lose her mind from the hormonal roller coaster, but I didn't want a break from trying to fulfill my deepest desire to become a mother.  He reassured me that I indeed did need a break to let me body heal physically as well as emotionally from the near fatal trauma of the ectopic pregnancy.  He also told me that because of the ectopic, our options in fertility treatments had been closed to only IVF (Invitro Fertilization).  I walked out of his office in January 2009, with begrudging plans to take a 6 month break from treatments.

Well, now it's March 2012, and a little over 3 years since I last saw my fertility specialist.  I embraced the "taking a break", and realized I did need it - much more than I ever thought I would.  We have continued to just try on our own, praying for a miracle to come.  Many family and friends have announced, "guess what - we're pregnant...AGAIN!"  now with their 2nd and 3rd children, and Brad and I are still left with empty arms.  You would think after 8 years I would be a pro at this, but with each announcement and arrival of a new bundle of joy for someone else, comes the same sadness and overwhelming anxiety from the 1st year.

Have we not learned anything on this journey?  Heavens, YES - we know more about reproduction and fertility than we ever imagined we would need or want to know, we've learned how to love each other much more, we've learned how much strength that we can muster up in trying times, and we've learned about God and His love for us.  The great, powerful love and comfort only He can give.  How thankful I am for that.

The past few months, I have felt a renewed readiness to re-enter the world of fertility treatments.  I just feel ready.  We are praying through it, but are cautiously excited about hope of what the future may hold.  To prepare, we are getting physically ready - I want to be at the optimum of health because that's something that I can do to make treatments and (hopefully) a pregnancy as smooth as possible.  Brad and I have been off of sugar for 10 weeks, and I have lost OVER 40 pounds!!!!!  Every pound that's lost, I feel is one step closer to the possibility of a healthier me...which will hopefully mean a greater chance of a pregnancy and baby!

We covet your prayers for us and with us as we trust God with our future, and pray with expectancy and faith.

Another Year Survived

First, I want to say Happy Mother's Day to my mother, who is without a shadow of a doubt my rock in life.  I have no idea where or what I would be without her, and I am so blessed to have just known her.  She is an example of God's grace, and a reminder of what a true lady is.  I love her beyond words!!

Alright, just to keep it real - y'all, yesteday was a hard day for me.  I share this with caution because I do not want to sound like a whine bag or that I'm search of being consoled...believe me, that's not what this is.  And, I am so happy for the millions of mother's out there celebrating - maybe even for the first time - the precious gift of being called Mom.  However, every Mother's Day is hard for me - it's a "in my face" reminder of the 6 year long longing in my heart that hasn't been filled - but I usually glide through just kinda holding my breath and keeping the tears at bay.  The week leading up to M.Day, I had prayed HARD for the Lord to help me get through the day with strength, to remind me of His promises in my life, to be filled with joy and love for the wonderful mother and mother-in-law I have, to not allow the day to become a day of sadness, and by all means to please help me to hold the tears back

WELL...

to protect the "innocent" I won't share the nitty gritty details, but to say I "cried" at church would be the strongest understatement of the year...much more like an "ugly cry" situation.  Not pretty.  And, please don't think something or someone hurt my feelings by doing or saying something heartless because that was not the case.  It was very much the opposite.  I was completely and totally overwhelmed by the gentleness and love in actions and words by a few special people and the tears could not be stopped.  I kept trying to stop, and they kept flowing.  I got mad at myself that I couldn't just STOP, and yet...the tears continued.  No one that I know of even saw me crying, but I was so embarassed by my tears and felt like I had a red flashing arrow above my head.  When we got in the car, I burst in to tears again and told Brad how I had prayed and prayed the days leading up that the Lord would help me to not cry today, but today had by far been the most emotional Mother's Day for me to date.

And, in Brad's way that he always does, he spoke truth over me.  He said, "Hayley, sometimes it IS better to just cry.  Sometimes not crying is just not the best thing at that moment."  The truth in that statement: Just one more reminder that it's out of my control.  It. Is. Out. Of. My. Control.  The tears.  God's timing.  A baby.  Being a mother.  Sometimes even the littlest things - like crying - need to be done despite our own willing because we (i.e. "I") never need to lose sight that everything is out of our (i.e. my) control, no matter how much we (i.e. "I") try to control life.

Doesn't take the longing or sadness away.  Just reminds me - "I'll never leave you, nor forsake you" is truth, and "I will give you the desires of your heart" will be in His perfect timing.  And, sometimes it's ok to not be able to hold it together, but to just cry.

I've shared this video before, but it so perfectly shares what this hard journey called "infertility" is for us.  No matter how our journey of infertility ends - whether getting pregnant, adopting, or neither - we will never ever be the same again.

Are You Aware?

Are you aware that this past week was National Infertility Awareness Week??

Sometimes when you are living in the midst of the infertility world, it's hard to see outside your own situation - you feel like you are all alone. But, 7.3 million Americans suffer from infertility!!! That's 1 in 6 couples in our country - that's HUGE!!!

I have watched this video several times, and I can relate sooooo very much. Please take the time to watch it, and maybe "you'll understand our journey...so far".

http://www.tearsandhope.com/emptyarms_video.html

I heard a statistic one time on the John Tesh Show that the grief that couples go through with the stress of infertility is comparable to grief that cancer patients that are terminally ill endure. WOW.

Please pray for those that you know that are having fertility problems. Whether they share it or not, they are grieving silently. Believe me, I know first hand.

It's Been A While...

...since infertility has been mentioned around here on the ol' blog. To be honest, it's just a subject that sometimes I have to completely avoid. Why? Well, the word "infertility" carries a WHOLE LOT of baggage with it for Brad and I. Pain. Loss. Frustration. Hurt. Sadness. Prayers unanswered.

Oh, the baggage.

For a very long time - already into our 4th year - infertility has been a word that I felt was written on a sign hanging from my neck. It was apart of who I was, and I felt even began to define who I was.

But, since my 2nd failed pregnancy in January 2009, I have changed. That pregnancy ended in a operating room due to a very serious tubal pregnancy, and my doctor recommended taking a break from fertility treatments to let my body rest physically, mentally, and emotionally. I didn't even realize how much I needed that break until I was forced to take one. And, goodness gracious - I now sit 13 months into "the break" from being poked and prodded, weekly trips to Birmingham, Brad giving me daily shots in the hip, and the hormonal roller coaster from high voltage doses of "baby making" meds...and realize it was needed in the worst way. Infertility had begun to define me. I felt like I was almost to the point of introducing myself as, "Hi, My name is Hayley, and I have fertility issues".

Now, don't get me wrong - I still wait with HOPE. I still beg the Lord from the deepest depth of my soul to allow us to conceive and deliver healthy babies. I have faith. And, I've not given up yet.

But, infertility has a little less of a grip around my neck now.

I'm stronger now than I ever have been (or so I tell myself). I handle dealing with "baby situations" a little bit better (most of the time). And, I've recently even been able to muster up sincere joy for others in their pregnancies (and, you have NO IDEA what a work of God that is!!).

I did something after Christmas that I have never allowed myself to do. I purchased something that I absolutely adored for a future Baby Powell. Giving myself permission, and then actually purchasing it was revelation for me. I was putting my faith into action. I felt like I was saying to the Lord in the act of buying something for a future Baby Powell that I believe He will answer my prayers, and I am preparing for the answered prayer. When I got home, I left the precious garment on our kitchen table. When Brad saw it, he immediately asked who I had bought it for. I told him I bought it to put up for Baby ________ ________ (yes, we have our babies' names picked out...). He simply said, "okay" and went on about his business. I know Brad well enough to know his simple "okay" meant "I get it", "I understand", and "it's okay that you purchased an item for a child that we have prayed to come for 4 years and that we continue to wait for". He didn't question me, or give me an odd look. And, it brought peace that I was not totally insane.

And, I have big plans of putting Baby ________ ________ in the precious little things that I have (I have bought a couple of other things since the first purchase) and taking pictures. My faith purchases. Our babies will NEVER doubt they were wanted and loved LONG LONG LONG before they were ever created, and they are truly gifts from the Lord!!!

I'm close (almost there) to re-enter the world of fertility treatments. Close, but not quite there. I'm emotionally ready, but mentally and physically not. Fertility treatments are grueling, and I've got to be ready from all aspects or it will do no good but suck money out of our pocketbooks and leave us frustrated with no baby.

Please pray with us - pray for my body, pray for discernment and wisdom, pray for financial needs.

And, wait with us in HOPE and great expectations of answered prayers!

Keepin' It Real

Today has been a "real day" - a day with "real" hurts, "real" frustrations, "real" feelings of inadequacy, "real" truth, "real" friendship, "real" peace. I'm not a very transparent person when it comes to my own feelings and emotions...nope, that stays bottled up inside - and, then comes out in explosions with "the ugly cry". You know what the ugly cry is...face scrunched, snot running, and crying so loudly and deeply that no one can understand anything that is coming out of your mouth. I also don't share the ugly cry with many people (thank goodness!), let alone talk about it. But, I'm feelin' "real" today, so count this as an honor that I'm even sharing this with you.

I have a wonderful job that allows me to not only work with young children, but do parenting as well. I have an opportunity to feel like I'm making a difference in the well being of a family, and that is what makes my heart tick. Today, though was a gut wrenching day when I felt like all the air had been sucked out of my lungs. A 19 year old mother of 3 little girls (yes, you read that right!) came to me today so beaten down. She told me that she was having to take her 3 girls out of our Even Start program because she was moving to live with her father out of state. She had left her husband, and was currently living with her mom - but, the mom was being so unsupportive of her, telling her that she isn't a good mother, that she would never amount to anything, and how stupid she was. The entire time she spoke, she looked at her feet, with the weight of the world on her shoulders. When she finally looked up, I could only see one thing in her eyes - DEFEAT. No hope, no chance for change...just defeated by the words of another.

When I got home, I stumbled upon a blog that shares about the personal struggle a mother had with losing a baby. In everything, she praised the Lord. In everything, she trusted Him. In everything, she prayed without ceasing. Numerous times she would write "Today I choose to live." I had such empathy and compassion for this dear lady, having walked similar steps...but, felt so inadequate as I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in her words. How could she have such unwavering faith in a time that she had complete and total reason to question God and just be down right mad? As I read her story, I began to sob...then, it turned into the ugly cry. Thankfully, God can interpret the desperate groanings of our soul. I began to pour my heart out to the Lord, and it was as if He said to me, "Hayley, you haven't been choosing to live. You choose to be defeated. No hope, no chance for change...just defeated by your life's circumstances." Instead of praising Him for the heart aches, and allowing Him to use those circumstances for His glory I've allowed the heart aches to define who I am, ultimately having power over me. Thank you, Lord for speaking truth to my heart!

So, in the same way - but, totally not the same way - I could relate to my little Even Start mother...that statement is about as clear as muddy water, isn't it? This is what I mean - the Lord allowed me to see the defeatedness in my life, to be able to minister to this precious girl tomorrow...and, that is a sweet blessing :)

After all the soul searching, I literally felt exhausted...but, I had to go to a meeting so I had to pull myself together. The whole way there, I thought "I just really want to be at home right now in my bed under the covers hidden from the outside world"...but I trudged on. It just so happened though (Hmmmm...funny how "just so happened" happens at the most opportune times) I was meeting 2 of the funniest girls I know to go with me. I laughed so much with them my stomach ached and I left feeling so glad I had gone. It reminded me of the verse, "Weeping may remain for a night...but rejoicing comes in the morning" (Psalms 30:5) And, again...I was thankful.

Dear Lord,
I praise you for the storms in my life. I thank you for this season of waiting and hoping to be a mother. I thank you for the blessing of being able to conceive not just once but twice, and the hope that gives us. I praise you that I have the choice to choose to live everday undefeated. I thank you for the strength you have given Brad and I to daily trust you in the journey. I praise your name for what you are doing and are going to do in our lives, and pray that in our joy you will be glorified.

Hope I didn't scare too many of you away with talk of the ugly cry!! Just keepin' it real today...

While I'm Waiting

Have you ever had to wait on God to give you the desires of your heart? Maybe it was waiting for Him to send you a husband/wife, a door to open for a job, someone to be healed, family issues to be resolved, or a multitude of other things that your heart has humbly longed for.

I have had to wait...and continue to wait...and, have went through trials and heartache while waiting...for 3 years....to have a child. And, it's not any easier waiting today than it was 3 years ago. It has been a difficult, heart wrenching, physically draining, emotionally numbing uphill path to walk...but, I'm still waiting. I've underwent every test, surgery, and procedure known in the fertility world (with the exception of invitro fertilization)...but, I'm still waiting. I have went through the trauma of a miscarriage and tubal pregnancy within a 9 month period...but, I'm still waiting. You see, "waiting" emplies I'm expecting something to happen. And, I do...I expect God to hear my prayers, and I expect Him to answer them. If I'm not waiting, I've given up all hope...and, that's just not good enough for me.

I heard a song on the way home from church last night that spoke to my heart. It's by a wonderful Contemporary Christian artist - John Waller.

The song, "While I'm Waiting", was used in the movie, FireProof - so many of you have probably heard it. This is John Waller's explanation on what motivated him to write this song:

"The explanation of this song is simple - I was waiting on God and I was hurting when I wrote the lyrics. I'm sure there are few people that can't relate to this song, but the important thing to remember while we're waiting on God is not to just wait but to actively wait. Serve...worship...and be faithful with what you have, where you are - even while you wait."

Here is a video of the song, and below are the lyrics. I hope this song will speak to your life's situations as you continue to wait on the Lord.

I'm waiting

I'm waiting on You, Lord

And I am hopeful

I'm waiting on You, Lord

Though it is painful

But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident

taking every step in obedience

While I'm waiting

I will serve You

While I'm waiting

I will worship

While I'm waiting

I will not faint

I will be running the race

even while I wait

I'm waiting

I'm waiting on You, Lord

And I am peaceful

I'm waiting on You, Lord

Though it's not easy

But faithfully, I will wait

Yes, I will wait

I will serve You while I'm waiting

I will worship while I'm waiting

I will serve You while I'm waiting

I will worship while I'm waiting

I will serve You while I'm waiting

I will worship while I'm waiting on You, Lord
