Oh How I Love Lists!

1.  Have I ever told y'all that?  I love to make a list.  I have notebooks everywhere - on the fridge, on my night stand, in our basket that holds our bills, in my car, and don't even get my started on my stash at school - and they are all just waiting for a good ol' list to be written in them.  When my mind gets C.R.A.Z.Y. scattered and I can't think because so many things are going on - I make a list.  And, I think the reason I love lists so much is I get to quit telling myself  "remember this" and "don't forget to" because it's written down...but, the best part:  crossing things off the list.  Ah, the satisfaction of seeing things completed.  Just makes me happy :) 

2.  We have been working so HARD in our house the past several weeks, and it's so exciting to get things done that we have wanted to do...but, boy are we tired!  I guess "no pain, no gain"...

3.  It's so nice to see that Fall has finally started to show up in the South!!!  The weather has just been AWESOME this week, and gets me in the mood to start putting out pumpkins and scarecrows!

4.  This weekend I am attending a wedding of a girl that I babysat when she was little.  This is significant for 2 reasons:  I am ATTENDING a wedding - like as a guest.  I have worked at more weddings than I could possibly count in the past several years, but one that I dress and arrive as a guest and not arrange one floral arrangement or carry one tray of food....hmmm, I can't even remember the last time that happened.  The other reason this is significant:  I was the bride's BABYSITTER!!  The girl that will soon be married I used to jump on the trampoline with and make kool-aid for.  I just can't get over the fact her parents are letting her getting married at the age of 12! ;)

5.  My heart has been so burdened for a dear family in our town.  Their 14 year old son was involved in a car accident on the way home from the Auburn game this weekend, and he was killed.  The grandmother was driving and suffered many injuries.  I grew up with this family, and went to church with them most of my life.  Please help me pray for the William's family to find comfort and peace that only God can bring.  God is using this for His glory though - 3 students gave their life to the Lord as a result of the accident! 

6.  This is so random, I know, but I'm so excited to tell you that I have half of our Christmas presents bought already!!  I have always bought and put things up throughout the year, but this year I have really worked hard to do this, and I've got a LOT done!!  YEA!!

7.  One reason being on top of the Christmas buying is so important is because I have 2 big weddings right before Christmas...so, I'm not going to have time to be shopping (I can't believe I just said that!).  Don't worry - there will be lots and lots of pictures!!

8.  My Fall Break starts in 9 days!!  YIPPEE!!  Not gloating...just thankful :)

9.  Our little Ellie has been so much fun lately.  We have only had her for 6 months, but it seems like she's been with us forever...she's been such a sweet addition to our little family!!

10.  I don't have anything else to tell you, but I can't end on an odd number...sorry, my OCD is kicking in!!

Playing Catch Up

1. I have been so twisted up in life that Blogland hasn't heard a word from me in 9 days!!

2. I have 2 posts written waiting to be posted, but haven't been because pictures haven't been loaded...and, they just wouldn't be the same without a picture or two!

3. The reason no pictures have been loaded is because my camera disc went CRAZY on me, and the Photo Shop is having to recover my 588 pictures that were on that disc!!!!! I am just HOPING that they will be able to get them with no harm done...

4. Since my last post both Brad and I have turned a year older - 31 and 29 respectively.

5. AND, Auburn won their first game of the season - WARRRR EAGLE!!!!!!

6. I am now officially in my last year of my twenties...I know this sounds like a little old lady - but where on earth has the time gone????

7. Now that I'm in the home stretch of the dreaded 30th birthday, I've got to get busy on my 30 by 30 list! Updates to come...

8. So what have I been up to that's kept me away from blogging, you ask?? Well, let's just say life in the world of the Powell's has been B.U.S.Y. We've been doing some MAJOR fall cleaning and purging of clutter and ORGANIZING like mad men (and women); we've been celebrating birthdays and eating enough cake to make any 2 people sick; graduate school and seminary classes; and we've been living our normal happy little hectic lives :)

9. Our little Ellie Jane has not been sleeping well at night - and, has been keeping Brad and I from sleeping too. NO FUN!!! We think she is probably sleeping alot during the day since she's home alone...any suggestions on her sleeping habits??

10. My school year is going good - I have a PRECIOUS group of children in my room this year! I am so blessed!

Simple Pleasures

I'm joining Top 2 Tuesday with Taylor! Today's topic is "Simple Pleasures".

My top 2 are:

1. A clean house. Friday has always been one of my fav days of the week for obvious reasons, but in recent days Friday has become THE fav day of the week because that's when my cleaning lady comes. :) Coming home to a mopped, dusted, sheets changed, toilets scrubbed, dishes put away, perfectly clean home equals one thing - The. Best. Feeling. Ever. Such an incredible way to start the weekend!

2. A card or note in the mail. There's just something about hearing from someone and reading the message in their handwriting...knowing they took the time to write a note of encouragement, thank you, or whatever the reason just to me...it just always makes me smile :)

Random thoughts to share today...

1. I'm dreading tomorrow (Monday). Not for any particular reason other than it's Monday...my least favorite day of the week, people! BUT, I only have 6 MORE MONDAYS until school is out...so, I'll take a deep breath and convince myself to get up in the morning.

2. Brad and I got to spend the majority of 3 full days together this weekend, and it was WONDERFUL! The demands of Brad's time and attention to his job force him to not be at home ALOT, and so days we get to spend together are few and far between. Thank you Lord, for the blessing of this weekend!

3. Saturday afternoon, Valerie and myself (with Ellie in tow) went to our local craft show - Art on the Lake. We go every year and have so much fun checking out our local artists' work. Among the artists is one of our very fav artists, and Carolyne's Diva Do's (after school craft class) teacher, Kelli Jackson. She does FABULOUS one of a kind pieces! If you are not familiar with her work, you need to be! Check out her blog, etsy shop, and Diva Do's.

4. Our sweet little Yorkie, Ellie, has just fit perfectly into our family!! She has met most everyone, including our 4 Favorties who have just fell in love with her. Brad and I both adore her and are so thankful that we have her :)

5. I have gotten results back from the 3 tests (GRE, PRAXIS 2, and APTTP) I had to take for Graduate School - PASSED, PASSED, PASSED!!! WOOHOO!!!

6. I should hear from Auburn THIS WEEK if I have been accepted into Graduate School...please say a prayer!!

7. We are less than a week away from going to Atlanta to see Beth Moore and I am just absolutely BEYOND WORDS excited....I can't wait!!!! We are leaving Thursday so we can get in some shopping before the conference on Saturday. It's going to be tons of fun! But, more than the shopping - and, you all know how I LOVE to shop! - I am so ready to sit and bask in the spirit of the Lord and have Truth spoken to me through Beth. Saturday, HURRY UP!!

8. We are having some contractors come out this week for a couple different home improvement projects - and, I am just so excited! I'll share more as things get started!

9. I am sooooo LOVIN' the amazing Spring weather we have had the past couple of weeks!! It's definitely given us Spring/Summer Fever...we've been getting our yard and the pool ready, and finishing up details for summer trips! I just love this time of year!

10. The next several weeks I am going to have lots going on. Be prepared to either not hear a whole lot of me, or to be OVERLOADED with pictures and updates...you know me, I don't know the meaning of "happy medium". Thanks for sticking with me despite my quirky unpredictability!

Things that just make me HAPPY!

I am joining the Undomestic Momma for Top 2 Tuesday. The theme is things you can't live without.

Well, of course I couldn't live without Jesus, Brad, my family, my church, the Bible...you know, stuff that really matters :) These are more of things that just make me HAPPY and I really really enjoy!!!

1. Jewelry

Oh the obsession I have with the bling bling! I would show you my jewelry armoire, but it's just completely ridiculous the amount of jewelry I own. I can't help it though...I HEART jewelry :) As I was walking the walking trail today, I realized I still had on all my jewelry from the day...who exercises in full jewelry attire?? Yep, that would be me.

2. Music

I just LOVE music...it makes my day so much better! I love to sing to it, listen to it, move to it, worship to it...music just makes my spirit happy!!! And I adore my satellite radio - it's almost always tuned to channel 66, "The Message".

So, what 2 things make your world a little happier?

Really Important Stuff

This post is going to be about REALLY IMPORTANT stuff, so you may not be able to handle the magnitude of deepness that is about to follow...

But, I'm just so very sad to see Lacey Brown leave the American Idol stage!!

Yes, I do like the unique sound of her voice. But, more than that I just think she is cute as a button!! I think her hair is FABULOUS, and her funky vintage style is just cute cute cute!

I'm really gonna miss her on the stage. It's a sad day for me.

You'll be missed Lacey...best of luck to ya!

1 Test, 2 Kids, 3 Busy Days

This weekend has been a busy but decent one. Friday and Saturday my mind was fixed on one thing, and one thing only - the PRAXIS 2. This is a test that my state's Department of Education within the past few months has deemed necessary to pass in order to start in a Master's program (aside from the GRE as well - aren't I just so lucky??). I won't know for several weeks how I did, and I am sooooo anxious to hear!!

I have applied for Graduate School and hope to be accepted to my Alma Mater - Auburn University!! I would be so excited to not only have my Bachelor's degree from Auburn, but my Master's as well!

Please help me pray that I pass the Praxis with flying colors, and am accepted into the Graduate School. I have been SOOOO STRESSED!!! Thanks!

After my test, I went and picked up my niece and nephew - Carolyne and Sam. Valerie and Robby had went on a trip to Gatlinburg with their Life Group from church, so my parents and I split up the time to take care of the kids. Brad is working 3rd shift for a few weeks, so it was nice to have Carolyne and Sam with me to keep me company for a couple days!

Unbelievably, I did not take a single picture while they were with me except for a few with my phone...

After church on Sunday, we went to my Aunt Shirley and Unce Billy's house, and Lori and Tyler were there. My aunt and uncle are like my 2nd set of parents - I spent sooooooo many nights at their house growing up. And, Lori and Tyler are much more like my SISTER and BROTHER than cousins - we always have the best time together, and we all have LOTS of dirt on each other. HA!! Carolyne and Sam just adore each of them so they were excited to get to spend the day with them. Of course, Lori had bought them "goodies" (as Carolyne says), and they played games, ate LOTS of candy, and colored until their hearts were content. :) Then, they went to see the donkeys. Carolyne is TERRIFIED of animals. T.E.R.R.I.F.I.E.D. The only ones I've never seen her run away from in complete fear were her 2 cats. Other than that - TERRIFIED! Well, Sam of course was excited to go see the donkeys - Carolyne, not so much. HA! But, she still had a great time. It was such a fun day!

Today, was the beginning of Spring Break for us - WOOHOO!!!! And, we started it off right - Carolyne and Sam didn't get up until 9:30! HOLY MOLY! It was so wonderful to get to sleep in after a busy several days. And, we vegged out all day in our pj's watching movies. It was wonderful!!

After I dropped the children off with Val and Rob this afternoon, I came home and made Chicken Spaghetti (one of our all time favs - I'll share the recipe soon!) and Brad I watched our most favorite non-reality TV show - Chuck.

It's just the best! We have been faithful followers since the pilot aired 3 years ago....YES, it's that good of a show!!! If you're not watching it, you need to be! It will change your life. Well, not really - but, I bet you'll be a Chuck fan after just one show!

News Flash

Randomness at it's best. Welcome to inside my brain...

1. Brad's trip back to China has been cancelled. Or, postponed indefinitely - whichever you prefer. Either way - I'm happy that he'll be in the great state of Alabama for a while and not across the world!!

2. I am getting sick for the 2nd time in a month. My ear drum feels like it may burst this go around. I have learned true sympathy for children with ear infections - it's awful!!

3. We have finally gotten all of our laundry caught up since getting our new washer and dryer. I am in love with them, by the way...they're absolutely fabulous!!

4. As with everything, purchasing the washer and dryer has spawned some project ideas for our laundry room. I foresee some home improvement/projects in the near future :)

5. I am so proud of mine and Brad's "kids" (you know the children and youth that make our ministry at church clearly belong to us :) ). We have several that are really starting to show true leadership, that we know are walking the walk and living for Jesus outside the church walls - and, it's just such a blessing to see them mature into what God wants them to be.

6. Brad and I are starting to plan our vacation this year, and I'm soooo excited about where we are considering going. I'll share more once we set things in stone :)

7. My favorite conversation from the day...my sweet Gracie at school was sitting in my lap looking at my necklace, and pointed to a turquoise stone and said "That one's my favorite - the blue one. Blue's my absolute favorite...today." "Today?", I asked. "Yep!", she replied. "So, does your favorite change?" "Yep! Sometimes it's blue, or orange, or pu'ple..." she said. "So, why is blue your favorite today?", I asked. "Because it's beautiful, strong, and BRIGHT!", she replied. This from a preschooler - isn't that PRECIOUS?? I LOVE MY JOB!!!!

8. We are 13 days in to Lent, and mine and Brad's sugar fast...we have done so good!! We can have some sugar on Sundays, so we really look forward to that! I've been so glad that we chose to fast from the same thing because we've held one another accountable.

9. I have 2 tests to take over the next 2 weeks to start graduate school - the APTTP and the PRAXIS II. I took the GRE 2 weeks ago, and have never been more happier to have completed anything as much as I was to have finished that one test. I'm dreading these next two like the plague!!!!! I would like to ask the powers that be - why in the world can all these tests not be combined into one big test???? Sheesh!

10. I got my tickets in the mail this weekend for Beth Moore in Atlanta coming up in April!!!! SOOOOO EXCITED and ready for that weekend to be here. It's been a while since I have been in a Beth Bible Study, and I'm ready to be changed...renewed...have Truth spoken over me. It's gonna be an awesome weekend!

Good Riddance...

Dear Boot,

In the past 8 weeks we have spent a considerable amount of time together. You have been great to support me and take care of protecting my weak foot. But, it's time to break up - officially. The doctor says it's time, and I agree; frankly, I'm ready for a change. I hate to say it, but I've already been looking around for someone a little less bulky and a whole lot more fashionable like:

Thanks for the memories - they were not my fondest memories, but were memories no less that will be sure to bring laughs in the future.

Just Thought You Should Know...

You guessed it! Despite the apparent BFF relationship status that THE BOOT and I have (and will continue for at least another 4 weeks), I've been given the "all clear" and been set free to spread my wings and fly...I am allowed to DRIVE!

I went to the doctor yesterday, and my ankle is looking FABULOUS - healing slowly, but surely!

Of course, the irony that the very first weekend in 3 weeks that I can drive we have yet another ICE STORM threat and so I can't drive is just so typical. My nurse at the doctor's office asked me to PLEASE be careful this weekend...she didn't want to see me next week with another broken ankle! HA! Do you think she was implying I'm clumsy??

Whether she was or not, I took heed to her request and stayed in tonight. I've been working on some projects. What do you think I've been up to?

I'll share pictures of the finished projects later, so stay tuned...

In other news, Brad is now in China! He arrived in Hong Kong yesterday around 9:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. in China). He will be returning home next Thursday!!!! Can't wait! He's supposed to send some pictures of Japan soon, so I will share those with y'all as soon as I get them. Please continue to pray for his safety and health as he travels. I feel certain he's coming back less of a man than when he left - in pounds I mean. He's DEFINITELY ready for some food from my kitchen that does not contain rice, noodles, or strange meat choices!!

Now if you live in any other part of the country outside of the South East, snow would just be another type of percipitation that you have to deal with and continue on with life. BUT, for the south...that means the world stops. That means we can't drive because of the safety concerns. That means NO SCHOOL!!!!!

That's right, dear friends!! The meteorologists have no idea the mayhem that has already been caused by mentioning the slightest possibility of **snow** this Thursday and Friday!!

Keeping my fingers crossed and gone to buy my milk and bread!

Books and Pajamas, oh my!

This afternoon, I headed to the mall to do a little stocking shopping. I went in to a new store, Cutie Patooties, and they had the CUTEST pajamas EVER!!!! They are called "Books to Bed", and come with a hard cover children's story book. The cute part is that the book character is the theme of the pajamas!


These pjs had Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare on them with the book, "Guess How Much I Love You".

Being someone that spends more time reading Children's Literature than any other type of books, and goes in to Books-a-Million and spends an hour in the Children's section...it's an occupational hazard...I was in love with these pjs!! What a great Christmas gift idea for a child...and, what a great way to start instilling the love of reading from an early age! I tell parents that are in our program they need to read to their child every day for at least 20 minutes, and bed time is a perfect time to fit that reading into your routine!

Friday Night Fun

Friday nights are my favorite. On any given week, you will typically find Brad and I on a date on Friday night, whether it's at a favorite restaurant in Birmingham, going shopping, or just grabbing a movie and heading home. What I love is that it's just an unspoken routine that we silently plan to do something just him and I. We don't go crazy and get all upset if plans interfere and we have to do something with other people, because that's just how our lives are - things come up OFTEN that interfere with US time. But, when things work out, and we get to have our Friday night together...it's such a blessing!! Some of you are probably thinking "y'all have 'us' time ALL THE TIME - you don't have any CHILDREN!" Well, no we don't have children yet - but, Brad has an INCREDIBLY demanding job of his time, is a seminary student, and a Youth Pastor...so, ummm...we. don't. see. each. other. very. often. at. all. - specifically just the 2 of us!

Well, last week I needed some "Bradley time" in the worst way. So, when Friday rolled around and there was an all-clear for our night out, I was so happy!! We went to BoneFish to eat (all I have to say is Bang Bang Shrimp...OH MY WORD...it's on the top of the list of absolute all time FAVS!) Then, we headed to the Galleria. It just so happened that Friday night was their annual lighting of the Christmas tree. I remember going for this annual event several times when I was a child, but had not been in several years. I had forgotten how exciting the kick off to the Christmas season was!
There was a live orchestra and a ballet company that acted out the Polar Express...it was just magical! Then, Santa "appeared" in the glass elevator and came down to count down the lighting. Prior to the program starting, children all across the mall had been given bells. When Santa came down the elevator, you began to hear bells EVERYWHERE ringing. It was so magical! All around me I could here children cheering, giggling, and shouts of "Santa!" filling the air. Such fun!

After the show, Brad and I planned to get a little Christmas shopping done. But, the only shopping done was Brad buying me a new purse, and some other goodies. Isn't he the BEST??!! Besides, Black Friday is around the corner - maybe I'll get some shopping done for everyone else then...and, I can ASSURE YOU - Brad will NOT be with me then because

Psychotic crowds going after bargains + getting up at 3 a.m. + Bradley = NOT A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE!!!

But, that's okay - hopefully I can get some of his Christmas bought :)

One of my Nearest and Dearest

And, then I remember the Alabama heat and humidity, and I talk myself out of the pure torture that would come with long hair - something called frizz. Frizz is of the devil, but is something my hair finds pure joy in doing just to annoy me.

But, this is not a post about my hair. Thank goodness!

This is about the person in the picture with me. This is Rhonda. I love her beyond words. She is one of my dearest friends in all the world. Our friendship began years ago when she taught a High School Girls Bible Study that I was in. I started out as one of her girls, but our friendship quickly grew to be dear friends. When I was in high school and college, her house was like my 2nd home. She was the first person that I went to tell I was engaged. She has seen me through so many joys and sorrows it would be impossible to count them all. She sees the good and the really ugly in me....and loves me anyway. She knows me, like really knows me. She knows what makes me laugh, she knows my taste and style, she knows my heart, she knows when I need an encouraging word, she knows when I just need to vent, she knows when I need her to speak God's Word over me ...she's one in a million, and my life is blessed because of her!

She had surgery today - very extensive surgery - and, although she does not like any attention put on her or anyone to "dote" over her, I ask you to join me in praying for her - for all things to go well and a speedy recovery!

"I'm Thankful For" - 2nd Edition

Today, I'm feeling a little patriotic.

Today is Veteran's Day - the day our country honors all the many men and women who have served our country fighting for our protection, fighting for our freedom - fighting for me and you!

So, I'm thankful for...my country and our military!

I'm thankful that I have the privilege to live in America - the land of the free - and for the men and women who fight everyday for that privilege. We are a very blessed nation, and I do not take that for granted!

But, considering this is the month that we celebrate Thanksgiving in observance of the very first Thanksgiving, I can't help but think about our founding fathers as well. America was founded on the purpose of religious freedom. How thankful I am to be able to worship my Lord and Savior in the way I feel led, and am able to be apart of the church I choose to be!!

So, what are you thankful for today?

It's OK to gag

Disclaimer: Before you read the quote below...please be advised that it's OKAY to chuckle at this. It's okay because - 1) I am not skinny, and I laughed HARD at this remark 2) My mother is over all the lunchrooms in the school system, and I was completely not offended. So, with that being said...if I was not offended by this, you shouldn't be either, k?

This was the conversation between 2 of my crazy co-workers this afternoon:

Teacher 1: I have to take my son lunch - he doesn't like the food from the lunchroom. If he had to eat it, he would just start gagging.

Teacher 2: Well, let him gag. It might do him some good...he might lose some weight!

HAHAHAHA! Lesson learned - maybe going places that you don't like the food is a good way to shed a few pounds!

Girls Night Out

Tonight, Gina and Kim took me out for my birthday. Yes, I know that my birthday was almost a month ago, but this month has been sooooo incredibly busy, this was really the first chance we had to go. We went to Sebastian's in Albertville, and OH MY WORD was it good!!!! If you are local, you MUST go - I promise you'll love it! I ate the Lobster Ravioli, and it was delish! And, this was my dessert...I don't know what it was called, but "heavenly" would be a good way to describe it :)


This was my gift...SOOO ME!! Is it not beautiful? I LOVE it, and can't wait to put it up on the wall - just have to find a home for it.

We had a great time doing what I do best - talking and laughing! It was such fun! (Yes, that would be a birthday crown on my head!)


It seems that the 3 of us find ourselves saying quite often, "We are so blessed", and that is truly how I feel when I think about these 2 gals - they are such a blessing to me! Thanks, Gina and Kim!!! Love you!

One boring week...

This week has been a little stale - nothing exciting to share or big event to plan, which doesn't happen very often. And, no birthdays this week!!! Just a week of hum-drum routine, so I haven't really had anything to tell you...but, wait til next week because things will be back to "normal" Hayley Powell fashion - hectic, scattered, and busy!! Several of you have been asking about the Surprise party pictures, and I promise I will share those soon...
